Music Year 2009
This is my year-end list for records released in 2009. A copy of
this file as of Jan. 25, 2008, is frozen
here. The freeze date normally
corresponds to completion of my year-end pieces, including my
Year End Comments.
Post-freeze changes are marked in this color (except for
re-orderings. These will be added up to Dec. 31, 2010, at which
point enough will be enough -- the file may still be changed as
ungraded records are belatedly graded, but no new records will
be added.
For records in hand, * identifies an advance copy, ** something
borrowed (or more frequently these days, downloaded).
Some records were initially released in 2008 but didn't arrive until
this year, and were sufficiently obscure -- e.g., didn't occur in last
year's meta poll list -- that they should be treated as new releases.
(Often these are imports or self-releases, which can be hard to pin
down.) They are designated -08. Records that were quickly re-released
(e.g., imports or self-released albums picked up by larger labels) are
treated as new releases.

Compilations/Vault Music:
Compilations of old music, mostly reissues, plus some previously
unreleased finds. There is much debate as to whether the latter should
be treated as new releases regardless of how old the music is. No doubt
there is a fuzzy border line, but records that are known to be 100%
previously unreleased are marked with [N].

DVDs
I don't review DVDs. I don't watch DVDs. I don't record them in my
database -- well, almost never, anyhow. Part of this is that I don't
have the time, the eyes, or at the moment even the equipment. I never
request DVDs. Still, some publicists insist on sending them anyway.
Here's a list. They're all pending, and will probably remain that way
until hell freezes over.
- Svend Asmussen: The Extraordinary Life and Music of a Jazz Legend (Shanachie)
- Fred Anderson: 21st Century Chase (Delmark)
- Han Bennink: Hazentijd (Data Images)
- Muddy Waters: Live at Chicagofest (1981, Shout! Factory)
- Ben Webster: Tenor Sax Legend: Live and Intimate (1965-71 Shanachie)
Songs
I've never bothered to flag songs before, so I've always come up
empty at year-end poll time. So I thought I'd start here.
- Mika: "Rain" (The Boy Who Knew Too Much)
- John Anderson: "Shutting Detroit Down" (Bigger Hands)
- The Flaming Lips: "Watching the Planets" (Embryonic)
- Chris Smither: "Surprise Surprise (Time Stands Still)
