Jazz Consumer Guide (27):
Surplus

This is the surplus file for Jazz Consumer Guide #27. These are short reviews of records that for one reason or another have been dropped from active consideration while working on this column. These reviews will be published in the blog when the column comes out.

JD Allen Trio: Victory! (2010 [2011], Sunnyside): Tenor saxophonist, always makes a big impression, especially in a trio where he is front and center. My favorite kind of record, which means he has a lot of competition in the high HMs; strong as this is, it's just one more in the series. B+(***)

David Ashkenazy: Out With It (2009, Posi-Tone): Drummer-led quartet, only wrote two of eight songs, makes out fine on the strengths of his sidemen: Joel Frahm (tenor sax), Gary Versace (organ), and Gilad Hekselman (guitar). The latter, by the way, is quickly assembling an impressive resume. B+(***)

David Binney: Graylen Epicenter (2010 [2011], Mythology): The leader as producer as much as alto saxophonist, combining extra horns (Chris Potter, Ambrose Akinmusire), piano plus guitar, extra drummers, even vocals (mostly but not just Gretchen Parlato, mostly but not just for texture) stretching out to 73:43. Postbop largesse, with plenty of dazzling passages. B+(***)

Jane Ira Bloom: Wingwalker (2010 [2011], Outline): Soprano saxophonist, one of the few to have found a fluid sound in the center of the instrument rather than following Bechet, Lacy, Coltrane, Shorter, Parker, almost anyone else you'd think of into the weirder yet more traditional margins. Quartet with Dawn Clement, Mark Helias, and Bobby Previte providing superb support. B+(***)

Hadley Caliman & Pete Christlieb: Reunion (2009 [2010], Origin): Two veteran saxophonists: Caliman, b. 1932, basically a mainstream guy, so he tends to swing; Christlieb, b. 1945, is best known for a couple duo albums with Warne Marsh, which moved him into the more esoteric corners of bebop. Backed by the house rhythm section, a nice pairing. B+(**)

The Convergence Quartet: Song/Dance (2009 [2010], Clean Feed): Hard to reduce this to a one-liner, given that you need to point out all the pieces and how they came together. Alexander Hawkins (piano) and Dominic Lash (bass) work together in various UK groups and form the core here. Vector in Canadian drummer Harris Eisenstadt with his African rhythm interests and Braxton protégé Taylor Ho Bynum, a natural gadfly especially on cornet. But you don't just get convergence; you get clash too, plus a marvelous bit of township jive at the end. B+(***)

Oscar Feldman: Oscar e Familia (2009, Sunnyside): Argentine alto saxophonist, his fierce sax and roiling percussion reminds me of Gato Barbieri's early "chapters" -- but the lighter horn lacks the tenor's grit, the tango component gets a boost, and the two cuts with Carlos Franzetti's strings risk cliché. B+(***)

Ben Holmes Trio (2009, self-released): A tough record to write about, a basic trumpet-bass-drums trio, the lead centered and focused, neither avant nor conventional. Two trad pieces (one Romanian, the other Turkish) and something called "Lev Tov"), which sort of suggests Tiny Bell Trio but without Brad Shepik doesn't. B+(***)

Gianni Lenoci: Ephemeral Rhizome (2008 [2009], Evil Rabbit): Italian pianist with an impressive solo album, sometimes ethereal, more often down and dirty. I had never heard of him before, but he has seven albums since 1991 and very likely should be regarded as an important pianist -- admittedly a crowded club. A subject for further research, for sure. B+(***)

The Giuseppi Logan Quintet (2009 [2010], Tompkins Square): Saxophonist, cut two albums in the mid-sixties that are still recalled fondly by fans of ESP-Disk's anything goes aesthetic, and 45 years later has one more feather in his hat. I give a lot of the credit to co-producer Matt Lavelle, who added his trumpet and bass clarinet, and rounded up a band with Dave Burrell and Warren Smith. B+(***)

William Parker & the Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra: For Percy Heath (2005 [2006], Victo): Been out a few years, but I only got a copy recently. Wanted to at least run a very high HM to acknowledge it, but I keep pulling the slot -- it is, after all, pretty old, and I don't owe any publicist for the pleasure. Among everything else, Parker has developed as a cultivator of the bass tradition -- I'm reminded that when Lou Brock got close to the stolen base record he hit the books and belatedly discovered Billy Hamilton and Arlie Lathan and Bid McPhee, although Parker gets more than talking points. Little Huey remains an unruly big band, but focusing on the bass helps rein in the excesses. And when they click they're wondrous. A-

Júlio Resende Trio: You Taste Like a Song (2010 [2011], Clean Feed): Pianist, has had a couple HMs with upbeat records featuring sax and/or guitar, strips down to trio here and sustains the same sort of interest. B+(***)

Sean Smith Quartet: Trust (2011, Smithereen): Bassist, been around a while without getting much notice, wrote some songs that often sound like variations on standards, and put a band together: John Ellis plays sax, and John Hart guitar, and both are consistently engaging, nothing over the edge, but some very nice postbop. B+(***)

Tide Tables: Lost Birdsongs (2005 [2010], Prefecture): Live electronics and percussion credited to both principles, Paul Kikuchi and Alexander Vittum, with others popping and out -- Daniel Carter (alto sax, flute, trumpet) makes the strongest impression. B+(**)

Matt Vashlishan: No Such Thing (2008 [2009], Origin): Sprightly mainstream album where the leader hitches his alto sax to Dave Liebman's quartet and gets a free ride, often pulling out front. An especially good outing for guitarist Vic Juris. B+(***)
