Pazz & Jop 2013 Notes

The 2013 Pazz & Jop poll results are up at the Village Voice, with additional statistical analysis by Glenn McDonald here, and an introduction to those stats here.

The first thing that should be noted is that the number of voters has continued to decline, from 712 in 2010 to 700 in 2011 to 493 in 2012 to 457 in 2013. Someone should take a look at who dropped out and how that has shifted the poll.

My ballot and some analysis is here. My centricity score -- the measure of how similar I am to everyone else -- is .125, tying me at 351, which puts me in the lower 24%. Two of my ten records had fairly broad support -- MIA had 33 other voters (finished 28th), and Parquet Courts 28 (24th, as it had some carryover votes from 2012). Two more of my records were shared with 6-7 voters, three with 1-3, and three with none. Similar ballots mostly came from people I recognize (Matt Rice, Jason Gubbels, Greg Kot, Christian Hoard, Michael Tatum), although none were very similar (.142, .120, .105, .074, .065). (Christgau, on my list at .036, had four people with closer ballots than Rice's was with mine.)

Ratio of P&J points to Metacritic file points: formula is ((PJ + 5) / 2.25 / (MC + 5)). The extra points (5) avoid divide-by-zero problems, and the extra dividend balances the scales. The latter figure is calculated so that the top 200 has as many gainers as losers.
